~~~~~~~~~~READER FEEDBACK~~~~~~~~~~~
HYPING NUMBERS: ARE 95% OF ARTISTS REALLY FAILURES?
http://www.musicdish.com/mag/?id=3734
Nice retort for the 95% argument. I think your conclusions 95%
correct. The only hole that I see, which you may want to
incorporate into future postings is that you say record companies
are "far from bankruptcy"
Applying your same understanding of economics to this statement
you would see that you are in error. Bankruptcy does not mean
that you have no money, it simply means that you cannot pay your
bills. So, if your company earns $100,000,000 gross revenue a
year but it's annual expenses are $200,000,000 a year, then they
would be eligible for bankruptcy.
Applying this philosophy we see the in fact almost every major
label is "close to bankruptcy," largely because they operate on
very narrow profit margins.
Case in point was PollyGram records which when sold as part of
the UNI package to Seagram was earning about $350 Million a year
(record division only) It was costing PollyGram Diversified
Entertainment over $290 Million a year to fund them. Likewise
the same can be said at Motown, which in 1997 earned $100 Million
gross and nearly busted Universal with overhead costs. Other
examples are Warner Brothers which costs WEA almost as much to
fund and they earn in gross revenue, (about $600 Million) and
Capitol Records which accounts for the minority share of EMGs
revenue when compared to he publishing arm of their portfolio.
All in all, very few large record companies generate large
profits for themselves, but rather act as a support function for
other areas of revenue for their holding companies. Usually in
areas unrelated to music. So, as much as I hate to agree with Ms.
Love, she happens to have a point.
"Could UPN or CBS or Walt Disney survive with a 95% failure rate
for their TV and radio programming? That's like having the XFL on
for 22.8 hours of the day!"
That is a classic line and analogy! Kudos!
"The labels are in a similar position: 5% of their acts are
supporting not only themselves, but 95% of the remaining roster.
If you peel away 2% from the 'top', either that places that much
more pressure on the remaining 3% or reduces the 95% portion.
Peel away 5% and you're left with no business. In addition it is
this 5% that has brand recognition, not the labels. "
Though the math adds up, it assumes that there are no equally
qualified acts (as a Britney or Rickie Martin or Eminem or
Destiny's Child) standing in line to replace those 5% which bail
out. That is the fatal flaw with your reasoning. The only way
this scenario could come to fruition in this way is if that 5%
succeeding is the only worthy 5% out there. That isn't the case.
The case is a system where inefficiencies and political game
playing only let 5% rise to the top, and taken away, a different
and still inefficient 5% would replace them. To assume otherwise
is to say there are only those small number of quality artists
out there, and if that is true, none of the rest matters. The
other 95% of us will always fail anyway. It's a flawed system,
and any number of quality artists will rise to the top of that
system to replace the few that bail to do it on their own.
Interesting premise, and I agree with most of the article.
